Backslides and strides.

A handful of threads this week hint at how Africa and its geopolitics are changing.

Much of the continent is less safe, less secure and less democratic than it was a decade ago. This is according to the Ibrahim index of African governance, which tracks leadership and democracy across Africa’s 54 countries. The backslide reflects political trends that were fuelled by the pandemic, it says, including a surge in military coups and the spread of armed conflicts.

These developments now threaten to stall, and even reverse, political progress, according to the report. And they’re already holding back progress in health, education and economic opportunities.
