The Guardian is marking one year since the murders of activist Bruno Pereira and journalist Dom Phillips by publishing a series of articles as part of a project that continues their work on documenting threats to the Amazon. They include a piece naming the multinational companies that have industrialised the rainforest, and the jump in infant mortality among indigenous peoples which is linked to that industrialisation.

Some of the coverage also features moves to protect the Amazon. The past year has seen optimism emerge on that front, off the back of Lula’s election victory in November. We’ve seen in past Briefings that, slowly but surely, the new president is honouring election promises to protect the region.
