Africa enters the war scene.
A recent accusation by the United States that South Africa is supplying arms to Russia—which was, predictably, denied—has created an opportunity for the country to put itself forward as peace broker.
Following the diplomatic exchange, president Cyril Ramaphosa announced a plan to visit Moscow and Kyiv along with leaders of five other African countries. They say they want to help find a resolution to the war. Putin and Zelensky have reportedly agreed to the meetings.
The fact that South Africa has failed to resolve conflicts closer to home in Ethiopia, Sudan and the DRC is but one indication that this is about more than a peace mission.
