More migrants died in the first quarter of 2023, while attempting to cross the central Mediterranean in smugglers’ boats, than at any 3-month period in the past six years, according to the UN. Delayed rescues are a factor, it said.
The figures were released over a busy few days for Italy’s coastguard, which was called to rescue 1200 people on two fishing boats. In a separate incident, at least 25 people died after a boat carrying people from sub-Saharan Africa sank off the coast of Tunisia.
