We hear much about forests, water, biodiversity—hardly at all about oceans and the so-called high seas: areas that lie beyond national boundaries. They make up two-thirds of the Earth’s ocean surface, just 1.2% of which have some form of environmental protection.
A treaty to protect these natural resources has been in the works for almost two decades. And last Saturday night, more than 190 countries finally agreed to a deal after heated round-the-clock talks at the UN’s headquarters in New York City.
