The picture is bleak.
A week or so after a strong earthquake and aftershocks hit Turkey and Syria, the initial reports of fatalities are giving way to extensive coverage of reasons behind the high toll and the aftermath that’s unfolding—we’ve sifted through a few of them to extract some key points:
The death toll now stands at more than 36,000 and continues to rise. The UN expects it to reach 50,000. Hopes of finding people alive have all but faded, bar some exceptional rescues. Millions are left homeless.
