That’s according to the Economist’s Democracy Index.
But the ‘bounceback’ analysts expected to follow the lifting of pandemic-related restrictions didn’t quite materialise. Last year, the downward slide simply stalled, according to the most recent edition of the index.
Almost half the world’s population lives under some kind of democratic system—but only 8% live in a full democracy, and more than a third under authoritarian rule.
