Different focus, similar challenges.
There’s another UN meeting on the heels of the climate COP that concluded last month—this one focusing on biodiversity. COP15 aims to stop the decline of ecosystems and wildlife, aiming for the so-called ‘30x30’ target of conserving 30% of land and sea territories by 2030.
Just like every year, the media coverage for this meeting is not nearly as extensive as that for the climate COP, even though the two issues are closely linked (e.g. unstable climatic conditions disrupt animal reproduction). And when it comes to the bottom line of the summit, it’s a similar story: will it be possible for nearly 200 countries to agree on a solution—and who will pay for what needs to be done?
